Another way to implement melee training without it feeling like training or grinding is to have ground combat missions from the Mercenaries' Guild. That would also mean that the missions and the targets' skill levels would be able to increase while your Guild rating increases, so there'd be an automatic leveling up (instead of the somewhat artificial difficulty leveling of a roguelike dungeon where the enemies' level increase the deeper you go).
That seems kind of flawed. If they are really awesome pilots, they can't get an easy ground fight even if they've never done any personal combat, and vice versa. I suppose you could give them two separate ranks, but that would be awkward.

Awesome pilot at the beginning of the game? Strange... There should be new (most important) skill: "Fighter pilot" or at least "Pilot". AFAIK every space pilots graduated some kind of "academy" but even after school they're rookies. Yes, I know. We're holding "rudder" but such skill will give more maneuverability, acceleration and efficiency for shooting.

This skill will grow with "time in space" (like IRL "hours of flight") but only (or mostly) for "manual control" (without long and constant afterburner runs or autopilot). Gun shooting or missile launching should have their own stats - better percentage of hit, better efficiency (higher skill causes hitting in vital parts of ship, not only in armor; for disablers it'll require less missiles/torpedos).

More experience causes better control over our ship (faster maneuvers and better acceleration up to 100% ship's possibility). Maybe it should be connected to type of ship - pilot experienced with Demon will know little about Drayman but will learn faster than complete rookie (e.g. news stats for ships: very unfamiliar, unfamiliar, familiar, very familiar; or something like this).

I've gotten better as a pilot since I've learned how things work. I actually like keeping it player-ability based, myself. That way it doesn't distract from that part at least being Wing-Commander like.

The rest of the stuff, which sits outside of Wing Commander, seems a nice place to introduce skills, but if you start messing with the basic Privateer formula then this project gets off-message. The other stuff is more like bonus material, I think.

Yeah, it's true, you do improve a lot behind the keyboard. I recently perfected my cap-ship skills, without having a cap-skills bar in the quine.

With a special fighter/space skill suggested above you'd be pretty green and vulnerable at the beginning of the game, not only are you left in a rusty old Tarsus, with poor maneuverability, but also your poor skills will now also affect your already crippled ship.

You will learn in real life how to best control your ship, and what tactics to use.

So, when I'll begin new game then I'll be cheating, right? Oh, comm on! I've got experience after previous gameplay.

You're a veteran, or some other role-playing excuse. I'd rather not have the game handicap what is a pretty straight-forward mechanic.

I've got to be honest, I don't particularly like the high importance of statistics for ground combat. I definitely don't want that extending to space.
