Wondering if it's possible to have a feature where you could message "hold fire... don't shoot my target" which would be obeyed by friendly ships.

Yes, it could be very good IMO.
First of all, merchants shouldn't be such aggressive like right now. Every (friendly) NPCs acts like sharks when they feel blood - attack, attack, attack at all cost every hostile ship. Even small and fragile Tarsus can attack Gothri or hostile capital ship (during mission against Pirate Nexus I saw "suicide" Tarsus...). Drayman's "long shot" with missiles destroyed several times "my disabled targets".
Well, Confeds and Militia have their own job but they could "hold fire" if we're on friendlier term with them... and higher reputation at Mercenaries Guild. Maybe it could depend on our ship's type too (better "fighter" = bigger chance that they will agree). _________________ Genuine Lifelike Individual

Like that idea. Could be very good to have, and would add some more "interaction" to the game, between us and the NPC I mean.

Well, A* v0.7.x will has "persistent ships/characters". Maybe they should remember our doings in past and act/react properly to them: "Hey, it's you! You saved our butts during fight with Kilrathies. Good hunting!" as opposed to "Damn! Not you again. You screwed up last fight and we lost some ships. Get a hell out of here!"... or something it this way. _________________ Genuine Lifelike Individual

When do NPCs keep shooting disabled ships? I thought they ignored them when they were disabled.
I also like the fact that the merchants stick together and actually fight, instead of milling about like lambs.

They shooting to hostile ship from long range using missiles. We can't see them ("radar contact" only) but when they launch missile it's too late to stop it before it'll hit (meanwhile) disabled ship.

Self-defense is reasonable but should be restricted to defense only (but it's acceptable for defending other merchants in trouble). They shouldn't attack our opponent if we didn't ask for help or we'll clearly say "Leave them to me".
Actually they don't "stick together" - they'll attack every hostile ship even if this means leaving slower merchant behind. They don't fly like bombers over Germany during WWII covering one another. There just arise conniption and they fight regardless of damage it may cause to other ships... or even their own (see: Tarsus vs. Capship). _________________ Genuine Lifelike Individual
